150th Anniversary of the Civil War
Delaware residents are in for a historical treat. The State of Delaware's Heritage Commission has colloborated with historical sites throughout the State for events that will dvelve into what it was like in Delaware during the Civil War.
Some of the upcoming events are:
- April 30, 2011 - January 1, 2012- Civil War Exhibit: "An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: the du Ponts and the Civil War"
This exhibit explores the roles played by the du Pont family members, E.I. du Pont de Neumors and Co., and the local community in response to the Civil War, the most devastating conflict Americans have ever seen.
- May 6, 2011, 7 p.m.- "Choosing Sides" Program Kicks Off Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration
Well-known historian Adam Goodheart will discuss his new book, 1861: The Civil War Experience, as well as the days between the election of Abraham Lincoln and the outbreak of War, while Delaware and its citizens stuggled to cope with unstoppable forces.
- May 6-8, 2011 2nd Delaware Regiment Civil War Encampment at Old Dover Days
During Dover Days in May, the 2nd Delaware Regiment (Union reenactors) will have an encampment at Court Street, in front of Legislative Hall. The Regiment will give lectures, tours, a period cooking demonstration, drill and firing demonstrations, and more.
This is a great way to spend the spring into summer months. These are all family events so bring the children to learn more about Delaware History.
