And What Have You Done Lately?

Benjamin Franklin- I grew up with the simple notion that this man’s biggest achievement revolved around a kite with a key in a lightening storm . Accompanying my child on a field trip to Philadephia changed that considerably. My daughter’classmates, whining and winding their way about the streets of the City of Brotherly Love, turned a deaf ear to our tour guide’s informative lecture during an exhausting walk. (Really, you can’t blame them for having the attention span of say…..6 year olds.) As for me, the idea of walking along the same paths as this historic figure inspired me to brush up on my history . And, what a history! Check out a library book, send a letter, warm yourself by a heater, call for the police or report a fire…. You have Ben Franklin to thank.

Have you ever had a day when the extent of your activities could be reported as heavy potato chip consumption coupled with lethargic viewing of the Cartoon Network in your warn out Lazy Boy? You can bet if such things existed in his time, Benjamin Franklin would most assuredly have spurned such frivolilities. He had things to invent, people to see and essays to write.

Perhaps, as 2008 is still in its infancy, we may all keep Mr. Franklin as a frame of reference when creating and following through with our modest resolutions. I know that I will.
