Fedex helping victims of Katrina

We are gratified to see that our shipping partner, Federal Express, is helping the victims of hurricane Katrina. In addition to aiding employees, the Memphis-based company is working with the American Red Cross, Heart to Heart International and Oprah Winfrey's Angel Network in collecting and delivering supplies for victims. The company also has donated one million dollars to the Red Cross.

States increase efforts to levy tax on online purchases

This shouldn't exactly be shocking news to all of the online retailers out there.
More than likely, they are well aware of the Streamlined Sales Tax Project, and their efforts to collect state sales taxes on goods sold over the web.

Here's the lowdown-

In 1992 the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that prevented states from forcing online businesses to collect state sales taxes unless the business has a physical presence in the state. Among the reasons cited were varying complexities in tax jurisdictions, and definitions of taxable goods.

Well, the band of 13 States currently headlining the Streamlined Sales Tax Project have been fighting furiously to unify tax rules and definitions ever since. Their efforts include lobbying federal lawmakers to pass new legislation to circumvent the Supreme Court ruling, and to "encourage" online businesses to do the right thing- collect and pay sales taxes.

How far are we away from mandatory internet tax collection?

You're guess is as good as mine.

You can bet that major online retailers like Amazon.com ($7 billion in sales) will be hiring their own lobbyist to persuade federal lawmakers to leave well enough alone.

One thing is for sure, all businesses that have some sort of online sales will be watching this one closely.
