To create a recycled aluminum can takes less than 5% of the energy expended to make the original can.

Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to burn a 100-watt light bulb for three and one half hours.

You conserve enough energy by recycling one plastic bottle to light a 60-watt bulb for six hours.

An adult’s fleece jacket can be made from the recycling of 25 PET bottles.

Newspapers take up 14% of all landfill space. Methane gas is produced from decomposing paper. The methane is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Recycled paper does not need re-bleaching. Thus reducing the amount of dioxins and chlorine released back into the atmosphere during paper production.

It is estimated that we use over 31 million glass bottles and jars each year. Only about 12% of these containers are recycled.

Glass produced from recycled glass creates 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than creating glass from raw materials.

Used motor oil can be recycled to pristine quality and the recycling process uses 50% to 85% less energy than refining crude oil.

One gallon of motor oil improperly disposed of can contaminate 1 million gallons of fresh water.

If you think it’s hard to recycle, it’s a hardship we can live with.

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority has over 140 recyclable drop off centers throughout the state. The centers are being converted to single-stream. That means no sorting. About 3 million pounds of recyclables pass through these centers each month.

Delaware also, operates three FREE yard waste drop off facilities in New Castle County. You can obtain free mulch, when available, from Cherry Island in Wilmington or Jones Crossroads in Georgetown.

If we all incorporate recycling into our daily routines, we can truly make Delaware “THE FIRST STATE”.
