Survey Says!

Top Employer Priorities for 2005

This is the eleventh year in which members of the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists (ISCEBS) have participated in a survey identifying their total rewards priorities for the coming year. You can view the survey findings here.

On the surface, this may not sound like a really exciting subject. However, something has happened this year that makes this worth a second look. A new non-financial issue has presented itself as the second highest ranked priority.

The survey says that 56% of employers now place talent management among their top employer priorities for 2005. This moves providing rewards programs that attract, motivate and retain talent into second place overall behind controlling healthcare costs.

So, why do we care?

Well, it is evident that employers know that balancing costs and the attraction and retention of top employees are both significant challenges. Maybe more importantly, this reveals a new trend within companies that recognizes the important role that demographics will play in their organizations future. With the massive amount of "baby boomers" set to retire in the next few years, the competition to recruit and retain the best and the brightest will begin to heat up. It's not that the newer and existing workers are smarter than their parents; it's just that there are less of them in the labor pool. The small the labor pool the more valuable the talent.

Did we really need a survey to tell us that?
